About The Orion
The Orion is an independent, student-run weekly newspaper at Chico State that also offers daily content online and on its mobile application. The Orion provides a student perspective on news, sports, features and entertainment for the university and the greater Chico area. The goal of The Orion is to build on the journalistic excellence at Chico State. In addition, we strive to inspire readers to think critically and react perceptively. The Orion was created in 1974 to provide a training ground for students interested in journalism, photography, advertising, marketing, graphic design and publishing. The Orion is free, and more than 5,000 copies of the newspaper are distributed throughout campus and to 90 off-campus locations every week. Published 32 Wednesdays during the school year, The Orion is a must-read for Chico State’s 17,500 students as well as university faculty and staff. In 2016-17, theorion.com recorded more than a quarter-million unique visitors who viewed 678,000 pages, according to Google Analytics. More than 2,000 users have downloaded The Orion’s mobile app.
Since its inception, The Orion has been dedicated to providing readers with complete, fair and accurate journalism. This dedication has been recognized at state, regional and national levels. With more than 70 major awards in the past 20 years, The Orion continues to set the highest standards in all areas of collegiate journalism.
The Orion has seen its weekly page-views per week increase dramatically in the last few years.
